Muscular Dystrophy Association

Mission: MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy, and education.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of San Diego and Imperial Counties serves over 1,050 local patient families living with any of the 43 neuromuscular diseases it covers. MDA provides help and hope to local residents by providing a weekly clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital, financial assistance for reparies to durable medical equipment, an equipment loan closet, flu shots, a local summer camp for youth ages 6-17, monthly support groups, and educational seminars. In addition, MDA-funded research is currently being conducted at the following local institutes: Sanford Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Ludwig Institute, University of California-San Diego, and the Scripps Research Institute.

MDA receives no government support and is solely supported by individual and corporate donations. The Association is the world’s largest sponsor of neuromuscular disease research including research into ALS, a.k.a Lou Gehrig’s disease and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, both of which are currently fatal.
